Mickey McCaldin was visiting Kenya from Ireland when he decided to go on Safari. He was being driven in a jeep by guide Masai Mara, when suddenly they noticed a wild cheetah approaching.
The big cat perused the jeep with a few friends. The three cats began jumping on the roof of the car, which was intense enough. No one imagined that one of the curious cats would then leap into the vehicle.
Razor-sharp claws, teeth and all, the cheetah hoppedinto the back seat, where it came face-to-face with Mickey. Terrified, the Irishmanremained poised as the cheetah approached his lap.
Ive been living in Kenya all my life and Ive never seen anything like this,” Masai said. “The cheetah just wasnt scared of getting up close and personal. At first Mickey was really relaxed, but I think he was quite concerned it might try and sit in his lap. Unlike a domestic cat, you certainly dont want that.
David Horsey, a family friend, captured the heart-stopping moment in photos. David had been watching the well-known cheetah family for a few days. He noticed that they were in search of food with no luck.
“As wed been around for a couple of days, I think they were used to the jeep so the mum jumped on top to get a better view,” he said.
Fortunately, the cheetah wasn’t interested in making a meal of the tourists. Rather, they were using the familiar jeep as a lookout point.
I think the other cheetah tried to follow her up but went a different way,” David said. “Once it had got bored of Mickey, it turned away and looked out of the vehicle for a few minutes. It just jumped out afterwards.”
Phew, that was one close call. Mickey and his family were visiting David and his wife, who are lifelong residents of Kenya.
Me and [wife] Vicky have lived in Kenya all our lives, but we never feel the urge to leave,” David said. You never know what youre going to come across just like this.
